I have now reached the point in the shiny new fandom where I am annoyed about the fact that there's not new fic for me to read every second of the day. or, well. There probably is, but I'm picky. or not even picky, I just don't want to read about Spock. There, I said it! I liked him, but have no interest in reading about his peen.

I am also still having problems with picturing Sulu in fic as John Cho. Like, I was never a big fan of TOS, so when I'm reading fic, I'm all, 'yes yes, McCoy is Karl Urban and Kirk is that blond pretty boy,' so on and so on with no problem. but when it comes to Sulu, there's, like, this sequence in my head that goes along the lines of, 'okay, John Cho is Sulu, but Sulu is Japanese, but John Cho is not = DOES NOT COMPUTE.' because, really. I think John Cho looks so Korean he could be selling Milkis on a restaurant calendar.

I suspect most people don't have this problem. SIGH.

Anyways, I wanted to share these two prompts from st_xi_kink because OMG SOMEBODY NEEDS TO WRITE THEM RIGHT NOW NOW NOW:

1. I first came to Starfleet on the trail of the killers of my father, and for reasons that don't need exploring at this juncture, have remained as an officer aboard the starship Enterprise.

2. Sirius Black/Leonard McCoy: Sirius falls through The Veil and, poof! All of the sudden he's on the USS Enterprise. Confusion, hilarity, and sexytimes ensue. (in the interest of full disclosure, this one is mine. so, y'know. WRITE IT.)

SERIOUSLY. These need to be written. NEEEEEEEEED.

bah. I still need more ST icons. This one is close enough.

eta: AND OMG THIS: Kirk/Reaper(Karl Urban's character from Doom) On shore leave Kirk runs into a guy who looks a LOT like Bones (can be whatever reason, coincidence, relative) and things happen

THIS IS WHAT I SAID. It's hard to not picture the old Sulu because HE was Sulu and you can't just replace one Asian guy with ANOTHER Asian guy and pretend that they're...THE SAME. OR SOMETHING. And I wouldn't notice if they had recast whomever they wanted in all the roles, but they went for LOOK-ALIKES...

yah, I'd read that somewhere, and I was all, 'well...okay.' but I still have problems with it in my head. It's like...SIGH. A whole big stupid issue I've been dealing with for years, because a white guy can play an American, a Brit, a German, whatever, and no one blinks an eye, so why shouldn't Asians have the same luxury? But then I think, 'But they don't look the same! It's *different*!', and then there's this lame issue I have with Chinese and Korean people having to pretend to be Japanese (BEEN THERE DONE THAT) and, UGH. I just want to enjoy the sexytimes with everyone else. :(

There are other people I have seen talking about the Sulu thing. John Cho said in an interview that he was told by ST people that Rodenberry named Sulu after some Sea in Asia that was supposed to touch almost all the land masses there or something, so he was supposed to represent that region more than any particular country. Then they gave him a Japanese first name later in the series because George Takei is Japanese.

I know that probably doesn't help anything. But at least you know you aren't the only one who noticed?

ugh, I know! I mean, I love John Cho SO MUCH, and I am ecstatic that he got this role (and that people are now writing porn about his character), but I'm still all, 'really?' when it comes to thinking of him as Sulu. I mean, watching the movie I have no problem at all; it's just after.

Obviously this just means that I need to watch the movie nonstop 24/7.

On the one hand I TOTALLY get what your saying about John Cho != Japanese. and original!Sulu is played by a Japanese man, so that's where I get confused... and Hikaru is a total Japanese first name. but then there's Sulu, which is not Japanese at ALL (it would be the equivalent of "suru" which means to do (most of the time), so his name would mean "to do light"? yeah... idek) and I get all confused. :/ So idk.

I totes see what you mean about Cho, especially because of the whole irritation of Chinese and Koreans playing Japanese, but I guess it's just a breaking of the mind when it comes to the character Sulu himself, like. Trying to think of him as not Japanese (for all the reasons of THE FUTURRRRE!!!!) - which in itself ain't very easy, but I'm slowly making myself imagine the hotness that's Cho when I read fics with Sulu and it's...it's getting there. Ris' fic helped ur hurr hurrrr hurrr.

It's funny, I love reading reboot!Sulu!fics, but I completely lose interest if the author writes/mentions any Japanese heritage because, nooooo. It breaks the believability for me.

Yeah there's non canon for him being Japanese. It bugs me when they do it in fics because . . . he was always so much *not* a Japanese Stereotype, so I don't like seeing him become one in Fics :(
Please tell me anime fangirls aren't making him into a horrible anime stereotype. I will cry. ;_;

Sulu is from San Francisco gosh darn it! *flail* I mean okay I realize you can have Japanese culture and be from San Fran, but canon never played that up with Sulu -_-

Heck before the character was given the name Hikaru, George was going about conventions suggesting Sulu's first name was Walter. So the actor didn't feel the need to played up the Japanese either.

You know, re: John Cho looking super Korean: I can't remember where but I recently read an interesting article about how at first Abrams was reluctant to cast Cho as Sulu because he's Korean, but George Takei really encouraged him to, mainly because when he was cast as Sulu Gene Roddenberry told him he was "meant to represent all of Asia" in his character. Which sounds kind of ludicrous and ridiculous now, but back in the day Sulu's main purpose was just to show that like. Asian people aren't all evil and Asian men in particular aren't all emasculated! So Roddenberry cast Takei to be just a sort of positive representative of Asians in general, and uh. Really beefy. Which is interesting to me now, if still very bizarre. (And I still have a hard time picturing ALL of them in my head when I read new fic, but that's because it wavers back and forth between new school and old school.)

Anyway, that was maybe slightly irrelevant, it was just interesting to me when I read it. And I guess Sulu is actually supposed to be half-Japanese half-Filipino in the show? Never knew that myself until I did some research the other day.
