I wasn't going to post anything about this since I'm sure that anyone who knows me knows where I stand in relation to what's going on with Wincon and all, but I think that even if you're not in SPN fandom, you need to look at some of the discussion taking place because it underscores a much larger problem going on with our society. Everything I feel has been said much more eloquently than I ever could in the following links:

and [livejournal.com profile] sparkymonster has an excellent but possibly trigger-y post on rape & rape culture.

This has gone beyond what may or may not have happened in Baltimore for me. The behavior on display from the party in question is absolutely repulsive, and had I been sympathetic towards her at the start, I certainly wouldn't be now.

Thanks for making it, I'm actually hoping that the more posts on the subject, the greater chance that the folks on the other side will understand where they're wrong.

It seems like a lot of people who had initially supported Nyxie are now pulling away from that because they've realized how *wrong* everything she's said is. Now if only *she* would realize that.

This really has opened up a blatant and hard view on just how pervasive rape culture can be, even in our supposedly 'safe' little pro-women fandom bubble.

I hate that the initial incident happened, but I'm glad that it's opened up an area of discussion for people about rape culture and just how damaging it is, not just to women, but to society on the whole. At the very least, I think a lot of people have been given food for thought, and that's always a good thing.
