May. 18th, 2009 01:44 pmI have to admit that there's quite a bit of GLEE that I feel whenever someone's Mac freezes up on them. I get very, 'ha HA!', especially when it happens soon after being snottily told that Macs are better because they never crash. ahhh, Schadenfreude.
and I had other things to post about but I've forgotten them because Dru wrote Chekov and Sulu ambushing McCoy with HOCKEY. HOCKEY. I just...yes. I am happy.
also, I wrote McCoy/Chekov last night! and I can't help but wonder if old-school ST fans are feeling much like I did when the first X-Men movie came out, which was along the lines of, 'OMG, you're getting your STUPID GREASY HANDS all over MY COMICS CANON!!! WTF?!?! You don't even know what the Danger Room is!!!! GET OUT GET OUT GET OUT!!!!!', or if they're feeling a bit more gracious. heh. oops.

Date: 2009-05-18 06:01 pm (UTC)I've seen a lot of people being pretty helpful with linking to canon resources and offering to beta for accuracy. The great thing is, though, that because of the AU aspect of the movie, a lot of that stuff can just be swept out and never bothered with. WE CAN JUST HAVE PORN! \o/

Date: 2009-05-18 06:29 pm (UTC)I imagine there are both (and more) sentiments among long-time fans, and I do get the "noooo you're not doing it right!" feeling, but ultimately I think it's ass to say it's better not to enjoy any ST if you haven't enjoyed TOS. I'd wager most fans don't care so long as new fans understand where they're coming from.

Date: 2009-05-18 07:24 pm (UTC)Hah, yes. I'm a computer science student, and I can also tell you there's nothing that makes me laugh more when naive new CS students come in with their shiny new Macs, only to realize that half the developer tools and languages in existence will completely FUCK UP if you try to use them on a Mac.
Macs are not good for developers. Not if you're interested in platform independency (making what works on a Mac work on Linux or Windows, so on).
I don't know where this idea that Macs never crash came from. I think they just assume that Macs never crash because so few people complain about frequent crashes. Well, d'uh. When 9000 times more people use Windows, of course you're going to hear about more Windows crashing than Mac crashing. All computers crash, for very varied reasons, and most of the time, it doesn't actually mean something's wrong. Something as simple as leaving your computer on for three weeks can cause your memory to REVOLT and crash the OS, simply because too much useless junk gets stuck in the memory - people need to learn the art of rebooting on occasion to clear their memory.
Um, wow I ramble, sorry!! <3

Date: 2009-05-19 03:41 pm (UTC)ahahahahaha, WHAT THE HELL? I would hope if you decide to go into CS, you'd have the sense to know better.
I never understood the 'never crashes' myth, either. EVERY single Mac I've ever worked on has either crashed or frozen at some point, some more than others. On the other hand, my laptop that I've had for about three years has - knock on wood - only bluescreened me once, and it was totally my fault because I'd unhooked something I shouldn't have.
and you can ramble at me anytime, hon! :D

Date: 2009-05-18 11:20 pm (UTC)I admit my initial reaction was a bit like that, and sometimes I still have to stop and go WHAT WHAT WHAT. But mostly I'm just happy to see people having fun in a fandom I've known is awesome for FOREVER. :D The weirdest part is trying to reconcile in my head new!ST canon and old!ST canon, though.

Date: 2009-05-19 03:44 pm (UTC)and I will admit that I was VERY CONCERNED about your reaction to it all. but I know that you love me and this just means we can be new-school ST dorks together! :D

Honestly, not so much as I did with LOTR. I wanted to bitchslap people with LOTR, but my reaction to Start Trek's newbie fandom is mostly eyebrow raising at worst.
I think because I can ignore this new canon if I want. Having in a totally other universe *really* helps, because that means both co-exist and one has not superseded the other. What also helps is that a lot of the fic is good, so what do I care if it's in another dimension and your canon is wrong =P
Heck to be honest, there is now more amazingly awesome Chekov fiction than there was in 2005 when I just gave up. So I am biased in y'all's favor.
The only real annoyance is that Trek was such a source of teasing and such a point of being singled out and not socially acceptable that to have this one be cool kinda erks me. Mostly because IMHO it is like the old trek so you know if this one is okay then why the hell did was what I liekd not okay> They're mostly the same. But my f'list is exempt from that source of irritation. It's just when newscaster say "first Trek to be appreciated by normal people" or whatever the shit, I have violent thoughts ^__^
The only real sore point for me, and listen closely because this is important ;-)
Those were NOT Romulans *flail*

Date: 2009-05-19 03:49 pm (UTC)yessssssss! Not only are they cheaper up front, but they're easier and cheaper to fix!
and I think you should totally do that cartoon. :D
and I totally feel you on the whole 'why is it cool NOW?' thing. When comics went through that, I wanted to hit things and be all, 'They've always been cool and it just took you guys this long to realize it! pthbbbbbbt!'
Those were NOT Romulans
dude! I was wondering about that! Because, yeah, I've never been a huge ST fan, but I've seen most of the movies and I used to watch DS9, and I thought they looked different, but then I thought maybe I was thinking of something else.

I swear not all Mac users are snotty! Some of us are Totally Reasonable Human Beings! ::sigh:: It's a bit like zealotry in any form, I guess.
