Jezebel linked to this yesterday and I spent pretty much all day watching it (and daydreaming about a Newsies Bad Romance AU).

SO MUCH LOVE.

and while I'm here, a couple other things I've been loving on elsewhere:

- Roger Ebert is really kind of awesome

- adidas World Cup commercial of geektastic amazingness:

How were some people still able to see the video? By the time I saw it linked at 8 a.m. eastern, it was already gone. :(

Anybody have an alternate link?

I disagree with him a lot on movies, but his social and political commentary is almost always spot-on for me.

yeah. so Prescott, AZ? I live 5 blocks from that mural. I pass by it every single day on my way to and from work. I watched it go up with the vaguest of interest, knowing it had something to do with the school being 'green' and diversity and hey. I can certainly dig that. but mostly I didn't pay any attention. it was just there.

and then one day I was stopped at the red light and looked over and noticed the skin color being lightened on the central figure. and I was upset but the worst part about it was that I was not surprised.

Arizona is beautiful. it has mountains and deserts and wide open spaces and forests and the air is clean and clear. it's the people here who are ugly. they are filled with hate and fear and so much ugliness that they don't even realize. they see nothing wrong with how they treat people. the city council guy on the radio was MILD AND TAME compared to things I've just heard walking down the hall at work.

the people who rail against this mural and claim they aren't racist are 1) stupid and b) think the rest of us are, with their arguments of 'they believe in racial equality too but why do we have to make it a big issue.' because this mural was not just random brown kids on a wall. REAL AND ACTUAL CHILDREN. PICKED FOR AN HONOR. yeah. what an honor is must be to have people yell the 'n' word at your picture. and what an honor is must be to have city leaders incite that behavior.

and if I were a better person I would figure out how I could help fight. how I could stand up and try to help these people see that they're WRONG. that what they teach their children is WRONG.

but all I can think about is how to get out.

You stole my comment!

The only thing I would add is that imagining Christian Bale ranting at the indignity of it all makes it about a million times better.

When I first heard they were planning on lightening the painting, I thought it was completely stupid and hateful and just. UGH. But then I found out it was based on actual children from the school and, god. How *do* people get like that?

I vote to just make you Supreme Ruler of Arizona.
